My Experience at Ship Inn Stanley

I’ve lived in Europe for six years, and the last time I visited Australia was over four years ago. I love my life in Barcelona - the food, fiestas, culture and animated atmosphere really does live up to all the hype.

But I’ve been itching to return home for quite some time. So when I decided to visit Melbourne for a few months, I couldn’t help but squeeze in some time in top destinations like Byron Bay, the Great Ocean Road and Tasmania.

I got stuck deep into the planning process, searching for all types of alternatives for my Tassie trip. I wanted to include a range of experiences, activities, destinations and accommodations.

My itinerary quickly filled up with a fantastic fusion of local lodgings and luxury hotels. I planned a route along the east coast, up through the north and over towards the west.

I stumbled upon Ship Inn Stanley, tucked in the state’s northwestern tip. This rugged region boasts untouched beauty, rolling green hilltops and quaint coastal villages. Stanley, in particular, is known for its teeming tales, postcard-worthy streets and sheer-sided bluff, locally known as ‘The Nut’.

Upon arrival at the Ship Inn Stanley, I was struck by the bright yellow buildings and unparalleled vistas. The roaring ocean was on one side, and The Nut was on the other.

As I walked through the bright yellow exterior and trailed up the wooden stairs, I began to notice all the little details - the golden frames, old suitcase and historic photographs were a nice touch.

I immediately got the sense that every corner had a story to tell.

I entered the Greenhills suite, took a look around and peered out the windows. I could see the sun shining through the clouds and the blue water lapping onto the sand.

Many Tasmania hotels offer oceanfront vistas, but this one felt a little different. On the desk, I found a handwritten letter from the owners and team. The attention to detail just felt like the cherry on top.

I headed up towards the gardens and wound my way through the wealth of plants, flowers and rustic finds. As I trailed up the hilltop, the views seemed to get better and better.

I could spot local wildlife and an abundance of bees and birds. The sounds, smells and sights were truly immersive.

I walked through the glass doors and trailed down the stairway to the common area. The dark walls posed the perfect contrast to the framed pictures, blue sofas and green plants.

After a small glass of muscat, I took a look around the room and stepped inside the kitchen. The lighting was idyllic and the sound from the water feature filled the air with a sense of enchantment. I sat down in the chairs and soaked it all in.

I spent the following few days frolicking around the gardens and sipping wine in the Billiards Room. We took the bicycles out and trailed around the town, from the beautiful beaches to the heaving hilltops.

I enjoyed reading my novel on the grass - and if I’m truly honest, it all felt as if I was in a movie. Of course, I couldn’t help but run around and take as many photos as possible. I mean, how could you not with a place as picturesque as this?

The evenings were crisp and the crashing ocean filled me with a sense of serenity and contentment. The Ship Inn Stanley was the perfect place to wrap up my trip in Tasmania. We had spent two weeks touring around the island, ticking off top attractions and seeing all the highlights. But this was the ideal spot to stop, sit back and reflect.

After pondering the days away, I couldn’t help but make a conclusion. So I’m calling it. Tasmania is Australia’s most underrated travel destination. The lush rainforests, quaint villages, abundant wildlife and surreal scenery set the scene here, and there are hardly any tourists compared to the mainland.
