Praia do Amado (Aljezur)
Praia do Amado is located in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. This is one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets, due to its rugged beauty, wind-sculpted terrain and powerful waves.
Surrounded by steep cliffs and verdant hilltops, this is the best beach in the Algarve for nature lovers. Compared to the region’s more famous beaches, Praia do Amado a more remote and untouched destination.
The beach is popular among both beginner and advanced surfers. For those interested in surfing, you’ll encounter surf schools on-site that offer lessons and rentals. It’s important to be cautious when swimming as the waters can be quite strong.
Praia do Amado is much quieter than the busier Algarve spots. Located on the Algarve's western coast, you can enjoy the region’s undeveloped and unspoiled environment. For those seeking solitude, adventure and untamed beauty, this part of the Algarve coastline is unmatched.
Praia do Barril (Tavira)
Tucked in the eastern Algarve, Praia do Barril offers a more quaint beach experience. Located near the town of Tavira, this beach is famous for its historical charm.
Praia do Barril boasts pristine sand that’s scattered with rusty anchors, serving as a remnant of the region’s rich fishing history. This beach is perfect for swimming and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Praia de Benagil (Lagos)
Praia de Benagil is famous for the Benagil Cave, a spectacular natural wonder in the Algarve.
This small but panoramic beach is located near the town of Lagos (Lagoa) and is tucked between rocky cliffs.
The main interest is the Benagil Sea Cave, a dome-shaped cave with a large hole on the top.
You can access the cave by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard.
Local boat tours are the most popular option. If you choose to get active on a kayak or paddleboard, arrive early to avoid strong currents.
Once you arrive at Benagil Cave, spend some time admiring the natural landscape.
The sun filters through the cave’s opening and lights up the waters, so be sure to bask in the beauty of this experience. Benagil Cave and Praia de Benagil are the best beaches in the Algarve, Portugal.
The beach is very small, with soft golden sands and shallow waters that are great for a splash.
It can get very crowded during summer, so arrive early to get a good spot. Beach amenities are limited but there are a handful of nearby restaurants in the village.
Praia da Rocha Baixinha (Albufeira)
Albufeira is home to a lively nightlife, drool-worthy culinary scene and some of the best Algarve beaches.
Praia da Rocha Baixinha is a wide, sandy beach located in the Albufeira area. This gem is ideal for families and anyone looking for a little extra space on the beach.
The beach is backed by low cliffs and has calm, clear waters. These conditions make it ideal for swimming (especially with young kids) and other water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding. There’s a bounty of beachside amenities, restaurants, bars and loungers available, offering plenty of comfort for a full day at the beach.
Praia da Rocha Baixinha is part of a protected nature reserve. You can bask in the untouched beauty while soaking up the sun, or trek through the several walking paths (one of which leads to the Praia dos Olhos de Água).

Praia de Albandeira (Lagos)
Tucked between two towering cliffs, Praia de Albandeira is a small beach that’s known for its natural beauty. Located in the Lagos (Lagoa) region, it’s slightly less crowded than some of the larger Algarve beaches.
On my trip to Southern Portugal, Praia de Albandeira was one of my favourite beaches. We spent an entire morning here laying on the sand, swimming in the water, walking around the caves and discovering hidden coves.
The beach itself is sandwiched by dramatic rock formations and arches, creating an iconic backdrop that’s popular among photographers. The beach is easy to reach, but you’ll need to navigate a steep path and a set of stairs.
Praia de Albandeira is smaller in size and there are fewer amenities here, but that’s part of its charm. If you’re looking for more adventure, explore nearby caves and hidden beaches by boat or kayak.

Amp up your adventure on the cliff-lined hiking trails and admire the panoramic coastal scenery. After a day at the beach, venture inside the charming village and taste fresh seafood at the beachside restaurants.
Praia Dona Ana (Dona Ana Beach)
This is widely considered one of the best beaches in the Algarve and it’s located within walking distance of Praia do Camilo.
Add this spot to your bucket list if you’re staying in Lagos or are visiting Ponta da Piedade. Praia Dona Ana is a wide beach with all the classic Algarve charm. Golden cliffs, giant sea pillars, breezy beaches… you get the point.
If you’re in the mood for adventure, hike the boardwalk trails to Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade (about 1.5 to 2.5 hours in total). Alternatively, stroll the trails on the north side of Praia Dona Ana and head towards Praia do Pinhão, Estudantes Beach and into Lagos.
If you’d prefer to soak in serenity rather than sweat it out on the trails, don’t miss the viewpoint at Praia Dona Ana. Next to the parking lot, you’ll find a small terrace and incredible views.
Praia dos Três Irmãos (Three Brothers Beach)
Like many of the best Algarve beaches, Praia dos Três Irmãos boasts rocky pillars, sea arches and secluded caves.
This scenic spot is dominated by dramatic sea pillars and cliffs, and it gets its name from the three sea stacks (the three brothers) that sit on this beach. With lots of parking space, a handful of restaurants and convenient amenities, you’ll find everything from umbrella rentals to jet ski rentals.
There are also paddle boats with slides, making this a family-friendly beach. Considering it’s a large beach, there’s more room to spread out. Convenience is key when travelling with a family, especially on a hot summer’s day!
Praia dos Três Irmãos is located on the eastern end of Praia de Alvor. It’s here where you’ll find rocky tunnels that lead to another neighbouring beach, Praia da Prainha. Arrive early to claim your spot in the sand!
Praia da Falésia (Falesia Beach)
This hot spot is backed by impressive red and white cliffs, making it one of the most unique Algarve beaches.
Praia da Falésia is located near Albufeira, a popular town in the Algarve. This popular beach is not only easy on the eyes… It’s favoured for its amenities and swimming conditions.
To reach the beach, you have to descend 77 steps. And while the trek down can offputting, it’s most certainly worth it. Praia da Falésia has a small snack shop and you can rent sun loungers, umbrellas and surfboards. If you want to take lessons, there’s even a surf school here.
If you’re driving, be aware that parking is extremely limited. Head to the parking lot on Beco da Falésia Mar, but arrive early to secure a spot. Otherwise, you can try your luck at ‘Parque de estacionamento da Falésia’ (as labelled on Google Maps).
Praia do Carvalho (Carvalho Beach)
Beaches in Portugal certainly come in no shortage, and this last one was worth the wait (or scroll!)…
This Algarve beach is small, sandy and scattered with several caves. To get to Praia do Carvalho, go directly down the series of steep steps and into the tunnel. Before you dig your toes in the sand, take a left turn and admire the dramatic cave.
For an active holiday, ignite the spirit of adventure on the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Best Time to Visit the Algarve Beaches
The best time to visit the Algarve in Portugal depends on your personal preferences, travel style and budget.
The Algarve has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, making it a popular year-round travel destination. Here is a basic breakdown of what to expect in each season.
Summer
From June to August, the summer season takes place in the Algarve. Hot temperatures, long days and lots of sunshine draw in big crowds of beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts.
This is peak season - most tourist areas get overcrowded and prices go up on accommodation and airfares. Despite the higher prices and larger crowds, summer is undoubtedly the ideal time to enjoy the best beaches in the Algarve.
Tip for visiting the Algarve in summer: Most popular beaches are accessible by car, but parking can be limited. Arrive early to beat the crowds! Some beaches are very remote, so be sure to pack sunscreen and plenty of water.
Autumn
From September to November, the weather remains warm and the beaches become less packed than during the summer months. Autumn is an ideal time to discover the Algarve’s natural beauty, play golf and bask in outdoor activities. If you want to soak in nice weather without the summertime crowds, autumn is a standout choice.
The Algarve’s beaches are best visited in early autumn (September to October). The weather is warm and the crowds are significantly lighter compared to the peak summer months.
Winter
From December to February, the low season in Algarve takes place. With colder temperatures and lots of wind, keep in mind that some tourist facilities reduce their schedules or close entirely. If you prefer a tranquil experience along with lower accommodation prices, this is your best bet.
Spring
From March to May, the Algarve warms up and the flowers bloom across the coastline. The temperatures are moderate and it’s an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking and sightseeing. You can enjoy the beaches in the Algarve towards mid to late May. This is one of the best times to visit the Algarve, especially if you want to steer clear of the summertime tourists.
How to Get to the Algarve
From Benagil’s hidden caves to Praia do Amado’s surf scene, the Algarve offers something for everyone. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation or natural beauty, this part of Southern Portugal is bursting with things to do.
By Flight
Want to know how to get to the Algarve? If you're travelling from Lisbon, there are frequent flights to Faro Airport (FAO), which is closest to the town of Faro. This flight only takes 45 minutes, making it the most time-friendly option. If you have limited time in your Portugal itinerary, I’d recommend flying to Faro and starting your adventure from there.
By Train
You can arrive in the Algarve on an intercity train route in around 4 hours. The train is the least time-effective option, but if you're a budget traveller or a backpacker, this is by far the most wallet-friendly option.
When you reach the Algarve, there are four distinct train lines under the Comboios De Portugal. Make your way through the Alfa Pendular (AP), Intercidades (C), Regional (R) and InterRegional (IR) train lines by booking your tickets online and in advance.
By Car
Hiring a rental car is a stellar option that allows you to explore the eclectic coves, jagged clifftops and idyllic beaches in Southern Portugal. You can reach the Algarve from Lisbon via a 2.5-hour car drive, making it a faster option than public transport.
If you want to see the best things to do in the Algarve, having a car is a must. Renting a car in Portugal allows you the freedom to create your own schedule, travel at your own pace and make as many stops as you want.
Driving in Europe can be an intense experience for many travellers. Here are some travel tips to help make your trip run smoothly:
Like Lisbon and Porto, traffic congestion can get intense in peak travel times and popular areas. Avoid the crowds by arriving early in the morning and planning your route ahead of time.
In Portugal, drivers stick to the right side of the road. Portuguese drivers can be impatient, so before you hit the high-speed highways, get confident in your rental car by practising in the backstreets.
Most popular European destinations are home to petty theft, so don’t leave any valuables in the car when you’re at the beach.
Where to Stay in the Algarve
Southern Portugal makes for a stellar summertime stint. Whether you want to combine your stay in the Algarve with a day trip from Porto or 3 days in Lisbon, this country has plenty to offer travellers.
