My Experience at the Barcelona Coffee Awards

This past weekend, I attended the annual Barcelona Coffee Awards with Flat White. If you’ve read my Barcelona Coffee Guide, you’ll know that I’m a caffeinated fanatic.

I’m from Melbourne, one of the biggest coffee capitals in the world. So when I moved to Barcelona five years ago, I had high expectations.

Initially, finding a decent cup of coffee was a challenge. I was seriously disappointed in the quality and flavours that seemingly dominated local cafes.

So, as any coffee aficionado would do, I began to research. I couldn’t take any more trial and error on board, so I navigated the never-ending pages on the internet.

Oh, what a dark hole that was. But I embraced it as a challenge, and the hunt for the best Barcelona coffee shops began.

After dabbling in the nuanced blogs, vlogs, and so forth, I carefully pieced together a compilation of the top coffee spots in Barcelona. One by one, I ticked them off my list.

And now, after all this time living in Barcelona, I’m exhilarated that coffee culture is finally fringing the scene. Por fin! Businesses are beginning to take quality coffee seriously, and the Barcelona Coffee Awards is further elevating its evolution.

Before arriving at the event, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I felt eager to dive deeper into the subject, and of course, lock lips with some legendary coffee. Upon arrival, I was met with a myriad of smiling faces, stately art pieces and swoon-worthy cuisine. After winding my way through the scorching hot sunny terrace, I headed inside and closer towards the aroma-packed action.

I locked eyes with 30-something well-known roasters, and said, ‘‘Let the games begin.’’ It was on like donkey kong! I had to pace myself, so I decided to take it slow and steady. I strolled around the stalls, admiring the artsy touch, flavour-packed tastes and bean-brimming smells. To say it was an all-enticing sensory experience would be an understatement.

After trialing the teeming samples, I picked out some of my favourites, including Syra, Harmony and Nomad. I popped by the virtual reality show, sampled some sweet cuisine and soaked up the alluring atmosphere. Then, I headed into a talk with Carlos Pola about origin and permaculture. As a globetrotter who’s focused on sustainability, responsible tourism and conscious travel, I loved learning about the perplexing processes and work involved.

After the informative talk was done and dusted, I decided to pick things up where I left off. More coffee? You may be wondering… Yes, indeed.

I strong-mindedly sampled my way through a handful of highly sought-after coffee roasters. And after frolicking through the full spectrum of swoon-worthy tastings, I reached a level of contentment.

Not only was I animated and exhilarated, partially due to the illegal amount of coffee consumed, but I was impressed with the amount of detail that went into every inch of this event.

From the cheer and chatter of coffee-crazed individuals to the passion-fuelled event organisers, the Barcelona Coffee Awards really exceeded by expectations. Special shoutout to Flat White for the invitation, gracias!
