SafetyWing Insurance: New Plans for Your Next Adventure
Calling all digital nomads! Before you jet-set off on your next getaway, back yourself up with travel insurance. Here’s everything you need to know about SafetyWing’s new Essential and Complete plans.
My six years living in Barcelona have helped me pursue my biggest passion, travelling. Living in Spain’s northwestern corner means that some of Europe’s biggest cities are just a hop, skip and jump away.
Whether I’m boarding a flight to Porto or road-tripping down to Southern Spain, borderless healthcare has been the ultimate game changer.
Barcelona has made my wildest dreams a reality, but the city also keeps me in check, too. As much as I love to romanticise my life here, there are plenty of days when life slaps me in the face. And that violent shock to the system sure keeps me humble.
City life in Catalonia’s capital is crowned by the culture, cuisine and community. On the day-to-day, you can catch me in a sweaty spinning class, glued to my laptop in a coworking space or making karate noises on a paddle board at a sunrise beach session. Wa-cha!
And if I’m not being an outright weirdo in one of these public places, I’m powerwalking through the streets. For a short girl, I’m told I walk ridiculously fast.
With ancient Roman walls, hilltop-hugging castles and Modernist masterpieces scattered around the city, it sometimes feels like I’m living in a traveller’s treasure trove.
From the soaring Sagrada Familia to the eerie alleyways of the Gothic Quarter, the city looks like it’s been ripped out of an adventure book. Literally.
Partying at secret raves in Montjuic, indulging in tapas in Parc de la Ciutadella and snorkelling at hidden beaches near Sitges… daily life in Barcelona never gets boring. I feel an unbridled sense of freedom and fulfilment when I’m here in the city.
It took me a long time to master the language. And I’m grateful to be at a point in my life where Spanish comes so easily to me. When I arrived back in 2018, speaking the national language felt like it was impossible. Every conversation left me feeling more confused than where I’d kicked off. It was like I was hitting my head against a wall.
And to make things worse, I couldn’t keep up with lawyers, doctors, bosses and basic day-to-day conversations. When I had a medical emergency, I always felt sick to my stomach not knowing what was going to happen. Not having an English-speaking doctor was one of the toughest obstacles from my first few years in Barcelona. Especially the handful of times when I ended up in hospital and had no idea how to communicate.
But I dealt with it and after over six years, I’m now fluent. Spanish has been a hard language to learn, but it’s brought me so many rewards. On top of the job opportunities, I’ve connected with people and cultivated deep, heartfelt connections. Our lifelong friendships wouldn’t have come to fruition if I didn’t speak the language.
Learning Spanish is just one example of the hard times I’ve faced while living abroad, and it’s helped me to realise some things about myself. Each time I push the limits of what I think is possible, I find myself craving more of the unknown. The bigger the fear, the bigger the reward.
Living in such a big city has taught me some rough lessons - like the time my phone got stolen or when my apartment was broken into. And these stories aren’t uncommon when you live here.
Although it’s a truly beautiful city, Barcelona is badly plagued by pickpockets and theft. And unfortunately, that’s just a reality of living here. Over the years, I’ve adapted to my environment and become hypervigilent of my surroundings. When I’m out, I have my bag glued to me. I watch others like a hawk and am quick to shut down situations that could possibly spiral out of control.
The thought of having my camera gear, laptop or filming equipment stolen is a constant fear. And I carry that weight with me on my shoulders. When your entire life is online, the thought of having all that swept away from you can be quite upsetting.
My laptop and camera gear allow me to create content and film for YouTube. And if they were to go missing, I would be absolutely stuffed.
Thanks to SafetyWing’s new Essential and Complete plans, I’m covered in case anything goes wrong. With these new plans, you can select add-ons like electronic theft or adventure sports.
And if you live in a big, bustling (but incredibly beautiful) city like me, you really can’t look past it.
SafetyWing’s travel insurance not only serves me in Barcelona, but it’s also useful wherever I choose to go.
Whether I’m hiking an active volcano in Tenerife or snorkelling in jellyfish-infested waters in Malta, I’ve got peace of mind knowing I’m covered by SafetyWing. Now there’s an even better option, no matter where in the world I am.
Whether you’re a foodie, adrenaline junkie or culture vulture, travelling abroad promises plenty of opportunities. SafetyWing’s mission is to provide affordable, flexible, borderless insurance that can take your travels to the next level.
These plans are carefully curated for digital nomads, and that’s what makes them stand out from the rest. Whether you want to venture abroad on a short-term stint or set up a base for the long term, SafetyWing has a plan that’s tailored to your needs.
I don’t like to live my life conventionally. I like to think outside the box and live by my own means. There’s a reason I live on the other side of the world, solo, without any friends or family.
I love the challenge of being somewhere new and having to figure it out for myself. The rush of calculating my next move, of booking that next flight, or of fighting for myself and what I believe in, means everything to me. I don’t live my life within borders, and that’s why I stand behind this borderless insurance.
