If you’re planning a trip to Italy, you may be weighing up the options. Sure, places like Rome and the Amalfi Coast are must-see destinations, but that’s not all there is to offer.

It’s no secret that Italy is home to an iconic inventory of idyllic locations, and Lake Como is certainly no exception.

Replete with rural escapes, lakeside experiences and awe-inspiring architecture, this northern-nestled corner is truly something special.

One thing I love about travelling is getting off the typical tourist trail and seeing life from a local’s perspective. There’s nothing that fills my cup up more than an authentic experience abroad. And in all honesty, Lake Como exceeded my expectations.

Before you book your next trip, there are a few things that you should take into consideration. Whether you’re searching for activities, events or hotels in Lake Como, there’s a panoply of things to factor in. Here’s why you should consider Briisa de Ness for your stay in Lake Como.

My Experience at Briisa de Ness

Having travelled to Italy more times than I can count with my fingers, I’d call myself a fanatic, at the very least. I’m overly enthusiastic about the cuisine, culture, art, architecture, cities, towns, and language. Did I mention that I studied Italian for more than 10 years in Australia?

Just say the word, ‘Italy’, and my palms get clammy, my heart starts thumping and my mind races at a million miles a minute. As a dedicated devotee of ‘la dolce vita’ and an overly-passionate pasta aficionado, it’s safe to say that Italy is my favourite destination in the world.

So when I got stuck into the planning process of my upcoming trip, I definitely had high expectations.

I dream about adventure. Whether it’s jumping aboard an adrenaline-infused day trip from Naples or sampling the succulent series of gelato in Rome, I’m down for practically everything and anything. Period.

Northern Italy was calling my name, so dabbled in the dazzling diversity of pursuits until I was struck with the idea. Bam. Lake Como sprung into my mind and as soon as it hit, there was no turning back.

I pictured towering leafy trees, the trickling lake and candy-coloured homes vertically stacked on top of each other. So, I began to rally up all the options and search high and low for the most unique hotels in Lake Como, Italy.

In my quest for a local, authentic experience, I felt bombarded by the amount of overly-tourist-targeted options. Then, I came across Briisa de Ness, a humble hotel nestled in the quaint village of Nesso. ‘Perfect,’’ I thought.

The location was lapped by lyrical landscapes, surrounded by steep streets and the property had a hearty feel to it. I got stuck into some research about the owners, area and history. Then, I decided to reach out.

Upon arrival at Briisa de Ness, I was greeted by Carlotta, the lovely receptionist. I took a quick look around and trodded up the stairs to my room. As the doors wafted open, I was immediately struck by the sweeping vistas from the balcony.

The curtain-draped windows welcomed me out onto the breezy balcon, where I was greeted by the crisp autumn air and fragrant flowers.

I peered down at the turquoise-hued lake down below and watched the small boats navigate the wind-driven waves that ever so subtly segued around.

I peered across at the emerald hilltops, the salmon-coloured buildings and the buzzing local bar on the corner down below. Honestly, it felt like I was in a movie. Everything was perfect; the fresh breeze, the vibrant plants and the whitewashed balcony.

As I watched the curtains waver ever so slightly in the wind, I felt like I was seeing it through the eyes of a local. Things were simple, yet profound. Briisa de Ness sure had a rustic feel to it. Out of all the Lake Como hotels, I felt like I had hit the jackpot.

Later that night, we decided to head out for dinner. Carlotta mentioned that the restaurant was closed, so we searched for other options. After trekking it around the steep streets, we tried to find two different restaurants. To our dismay, both were closed.

If you’ve been reading along for a while now, you’ll know that I love a challenge. Life is full of difficult, frustrating and blood-boiling situations. But it’s how you respond to these circumstances that really counts.

Following a somewhat frantic search for something to eat, we found out that the local bar on the corner was still open.

With 20 minutes until closing, we persevered and powerwalked our way down through the labyrinth-like streets.

As we arrived, I tried to test out my Italian skills. It turns out that even though I’d had a decade’s worth of knowledge tucked up my sleeve, Spanish had somehow, some way, replaced practically all of it.

Nevertheless, in broken Span-alian, or Ital-ish, I proceeded to communicate with the local owners. Luckily, there was a group of rowdy old men sitting close by, and one of them spoke Spanish.

Thanks to him, we were able to secure a table, a fist-sized bowl of olives and some very stale Cheezel-like snacks.

Although it wasn’t the Italian dinner we’d been drooling over, it was certainly better than nothing. Paired with a local beer and a glass of wine, I really couldn’t complain.

As I went to leave, the group of elder men stopped me and we got stuck into a conversation. And although it was a simple moment, it really put the cherry on top of my night.

I’m so grateful to be able to speak Spanish and have the ability to communicate. Whether it’s in places like Morocco or Italy, Spanish has served me immensely while travelling. If there’s one thing I love, it’s connecting with locals abroad.

After the encounter, I felt my smile uncontrollably grow and my heart pound. I became filled with a deep sense of appreciation.

Later that night, my head hit the pillow and I was out like a light. To say that the bed was comfortable would be an understatement. I slept like a baby, with drool and all. In the early hours of the next morning, I woke up to birds chirping and the sun peeking through the curtains. After getting ready, I headed down for breakfast.

Crispy croissants, delectable Nutella, freshly cut cheese and most importantly, steaming hot coffee. Hallelujah! After feasting while overlooking the luminous lake, we headed down to the port for a day trip.

Nesso’s port was quaint, charming and most importantly, quiet. From the ivy-draped rails and stone buildings to the vibrant colours and local white ducks, I knew the day was off to a good start. We ventured off to romance-infused Varenna, famous for Villa Monastero.

Following a foray fringed with the highlights, we enjoyed a classic Italian meal by the lake. We returned later that day, and as soon as the sun set, we headed down to Briisa de Ness’ restaurant.

Woven with three separate dining areas and a terrace too, we decided to keep it cozy inside the main room. We ordered two flavour-packed pizzas and a tasty tiramisu and paired it all perfectly with a glass of local wine that sure seduced my senses. In all honestly, the cuisine was an absolute highlight of my time at Briisa de Ness.

There are many hotels in Lake Como, but they certainly can’t all match the mouth-watering selection of palatable plates here.

Following a near-food-induced coma, I threaded up to the room and peered out of the balcony. The glimmering lights of the nearby towns flickered in the distance, reflecting off of the seemingly still lake.

The night was tranquil, my stomach was full and my heart was heaving with gratitude. I soaked in the serenity of the moment, before jumping into bed.

The next morning, I headed down for breakfast. After choosing a beautiful table teeming with tantalising vistas, I sat down and locked lips with a cappuccino.

I indulged in the series of scrumptious foods, before later unbuckling my belt. Breakfast further ameliorated my point that Briisa de Ness is a gourmand’s delight. I enjoyed an espresso by the terrace, before taking one last look at the luminescent views of the legendary lake.

My time in Lake Como had come to an end. And I couldn’t be more grateful to Briisa de Ness for the experience. Etched with an enchanting feel, the setting really couldn’t have been any more sublime. As someone who loves to relish authentic experiences when abroad, I can honestly say that this hotel steals the show. If you’re a foodie who’s looking for a serene escape, Briisa de Ness is one of the top hotels in Lake Como.

Cuisine at Briisa de Ness

Italy is renowned for many things, from the fairytale-esque finds and rich history to the ancient ruins and candy-coloured towns. But if there’s one thing this country does best, it’s the food.

Aside from the astounding vistas, one of the major highlights at Briisa de Ness was the cuisine. I’m talking mouth-watering, drool-worthy plates that are sure to have you swooning as if you were a fourteen-year-old girl at a Justin Bieber concert. Can you tell how much I love food, just by reading this description?

There are a lot of hotels in Lake Como, but not all of them have a gastronomy scene that can match Briisa de Ness.

Whether you want a traditional pizza, homemade ravioli or a juicy beef controfiletto, this menu is a gift from the godsend.

If gourmet is your game, you won’t be disappointed. I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the owners named Samanta.

After a lively conversation, she mentioned that her partner is a chef. ‘Ah hah!’, I thought. That explains why the food was so good. In fact, it was better than good. It was heavenly.

I ordered a classic Nesso pizza (mozzarella, tomato and basil), moltrasio pizza (tomato, mozzarella, zucchini (courgette), eggplant and capsicum (green peppers)) and finished it all off with a tempting tiramisu. To be completely transparent, that was the best tiramisu I’ve ever had in my life. I will be dreaming of that palatable plate for the rest of my life. No joke.

It’s safe to say I entered a food coma that night. It’s the flavour-packed cuisine that makes Briisa de Ness one of the best hotels in Lake Como.

Best Time to Visit Lake Como

Lake Como is a destination that’s on practically every traveller’s bucket list, and for good reason! Whether you’re after a summertime sojourn or a crisp fall foray, the best time to embark on this elegant escape really all comes down to you.

In my quest to find the top tours, unique experiences and best hotels in Lake Como, I made one crucial decision. The timing. Having lived in Europe for more than five years, I know that there’s a big difference between travelling during high season and off-peak periods.

girl at a hotel in lake como

So, I decided to visit one of Italy’s most idyllic locations in the early autumn months. And boy was that the best decision I made.

Arguably, this is a year-round location, but at the end of the day, the best time to visit Lake Como depends on your travel style, personal preferences, travel budget and the experiences you want to enjoy.

Lake Como is intertwined with an iconic inventory of intriguing finds, from the quaint villages to the misty mountaintops.

This is a true corner of Italian paradise, and I believe that autumn and spring usher in a new wave of beauty.

One of the best times to visit Lake Como is during the low season, in the months of April or October. These months boast pleasant weather, fewer crowds and a more authentic travel experience.

Plus, you’ll be able to score wallet-friendly rates on airfares, lodging and activities.

While the high season, late May to late September, is ideal for beachgoers and sun lovers, you’ll have to deal with big crowds and high prices.

Winter, December to February, is also another option. If you choose to travel during this time, just keep in mind that many local restaurants and businesses close, especially in more rural areas.
