My Experience at Atelier Madre Barcelona
I’ve been living in Barcelona for more than six years, and it’s safe to say I love it.
I came here to study Spanish, but I couldn’t help but fall head over heels for Catalonia’s capital.
As soon as I got a taste of the colourful culture, mouth-watering tapas scene and coveted Mediterranean lifestyle, I couldn’t see myself returning to my life in Melbourne, Australia.
Something about the city took me aback and ultimately inspired me to create this travel blog. I became eager to share Barcelona’s beauty, bedazzling architecture and endless experiences with the world. And thankfully, it’s led me to where I am today. *Pinch me*
Barcelona is fringed with fun-packed activities, buzzing bars and must-see museums. There’s no doubt that hot spots like the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Casa Batllo are worth the hype.
Having lived here for so long, I’ve visited the myriad major attractions in Barcelona. And, more than once. So last year, I set out on a quest to find unique activities and spots that you wouldn’t see advertised in Passeig de Gracia or Las Ramblas.
I stumbled upon hidden gems and was fortunate enough to connect to many local businesses. I dabbled in adrenaline-fuelled activities and once-in-a-lifetime experiences like hot air balloon rides and world-class winery tours.
The depth of experiences showed me that there’s so much more to see in the city. And despite what many tourists say, you can’t just ‘do’ Barcelona. If you’re eager to go beyond the standard tourist trail in Barcelona, don’t miss my article on the Most Unique Things to do in Barcelona.
So now that you’ve got a basic breakdown of city life in Barcelona, let me highlight what’s drawn me to Atelier Madre. Aymen, the PR manager reached out to me a few months ago.
Having read one of my articles on Barcelona, she thought that I might be interested in what was going on. And that I was. I popped over to the website and was instantly struck by what I saw.
After a little bit of investigation, I came to a conclusion. After scrolling through the online shop, I organised a time to visit.
And once that was set in stone, I couldn’t wait to see more of what was on offer.
As the day arrived, I strolled past iconic attractions like the Arco de Triunfo and Parque de la Ciutadella. I made my way into El Born and trotted through the labyrinth-like streets and ancient alleyways.
As I stepped inside Atelier Madre, my jaw immediately dropped. I spotted dashes of vegetable-tanned colour, vibrant accessories and ingenious creations dotted around every corner.
Purses hung from the ceiling, bags draped from the walls and human-sized stands were stacked with stunning leather accessories.
Atelier Madre was made up of sustainable goods and leather bags, but the website only illustrated a slice of what’s on offer. The iconic inventory of peculiar pieces and must-have everyday items is even better in real life!
As I wound my way through the store, I spotted a series of stunning finds - the croissant bags, woven handbags, and oh, so much more. I chatted with Aymen about all things sustainability, and I found out that everything is made right at the back of the store.
Watching them work away in the workshop ushers in a newfound sense of appreciation for the time, energy and effort that goes into each and every one of these products. The leather is sourced locally from Igualada, a small town that’s just an hour away from Barcelona.
I love that the range of eco-friendly leather goods is sourced from Catalonia. Buy local, support local! Learning about how everything is made, the processes involved and the intentions behind particular pieces was such a unique experience.
I selected two pieces that caught my eye - a leather notebook and a fist-sized red purse. The purse reminded me of a bag that I got on my trip to Fez in Morocco, and a myriad of memories came rushing back to me.
I customised each piece and had my initials engraved. That personal touch really put the cherry on top of the entire experience. I’m beyond grateful to have discovered Atelier Madre, and I’d highly recommend visiting this shop in Barcelona.
If you’re on the hunt for fresh concepts and top-quality local leather items, you can get a taste of that at Atelier Madre. Admire the array of awe-inspiring designs, pick out a few pieces and engrave your very own initials into each item. Don’t forget to waltz down to the back to see where to magic happens! The workshop will leave you appreciating your goods even more than before.
Shopping in Barcelona is fun, but the main spots are dominated by fast fashion and standard souvenirs. Atelier Madre is a space where dazzling design and local leather accessories are arrayed throughout.
The curation of peculiar products ushers in a sense of appreciation for the craftsmanship. Authenticity is ingrained in the heart of this business, making it one of the most unique things to do in Barcelona.
